I love this recording: it is my reference recording of Turandot, and all the singers are in their prime and give a full and rich performance. However, in my opinion, the very best Turandot is the very first recorded: the Gina Cigna/Francesco Merli/Magda Olivero/Franco Ghione recording. The sound quality is not very good, but good enough to clearly hear the voices, orchestra and the chorus clearly.

Francesco Merli is never under pressure in this recording, nor is Gina Cigna — these two performers were perfectly suited to Kalaf and Turandot. However, there are also the Nilsson recordings with Björling and Corelli, with are also very good. Basically, Turandot is an opera that can be exploited by many different casts; you cheat yourself if you only have one version.

If you should ever see a Turandot set with Franco Bonisolli or Daniele Barioni as Kalaf, buy it! These tenors both have the most stunning acuti of the latter twentieth century.

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research on this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such great info being shared freely out there.

I love puccini, and I love listening to Tosca, and Turandot on my ipod. But I think that "Nessun Dorma" is his most famous piece. It was the only piece I had ever heard BEFORE starting on my opera "kick". It is from the finalé of Turandot. Hopefully I'm not too late for your report!!

He was working on turandot when he died, so it was left incomplete but the work was entrusted to be finished by someone else. However, there are arguments as to whether or not it was finished the way that Puccini inteded it to be....

Puccini's publisher, Ricordi, commissioned Franco Alfano to complete the opera, referring to rough drafts which Puccini had left behind. Toscanini was unsatisfied with Alfano's first attempt, so he persuaded Ricordi to pay Alfano to make a second attempt.

While Alfano was still at work on the second attempt, Toscanini gave a performance of all Puccini had written. When he got to the end of Liu's aria, he turned to the audience and said, "Here the maestro laid down his pen."
