Bravissimo, this is equal or BETTER than Callas and no wonder: Kiri started her career by winning a New Zealand prize in 1965 aged 20/21 with this aria.
I love Dame Kiri te Kanawa but this is not the role for her. I saw her sing this at the Met in the 80s and, visually she was absolutely stunning and believable. Vocally, it was apparent she had trouble with this role. There were dynamic moments, notes, phrases – after all she is one of the greatest singers ever – but this is not her role. Countess, Marschallin, lots of others, but not this one. I love you DKTK!
Kiri has a lush full open focused beautiful tone But we knew that . Some roles are better suited to every singer so if you take that out of equation you are left with the voice and how every tone from top to bottom has the same quality of sound Very few sopranos have or had this . When she’s good she’s fabulous When she sings a piece that fits that big voice, it is truly inspiring
My musical tastes run to Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. I will, therefore, defer to the knowledge of those more versed in opera than I except to say that if this lady is having difficulty, I can’t hear it. This is truly marvelous to my ear.
When I clicked on this link, I thought ‘oh no, a lyric soprano singing Tosca….this is going to be painful.’ but then I heard her sing……WOW. AMAZING INTERPRETATION
I made the mistake of listening to Leontyne Prices’ version before this one. Leontyne’s version just ruined it for anyone else who ever tries to sing this song again!
You must have heard her in concert at the Met because it is a known fact that she never has sung a full Puccini opera at the Met. She only did Tosca once and that was in Paris.
I have a problem with Kiri’s Tosca. She is not a Puccini soprano. Hers is a pure, lyric voice who’s Mozart was amazing.. In the 80′s, she was a lot like Renee Fleming – singing mainly lyric roles. Her Strauss, Baroque and French roles are lovely (Massenet’s Manon, but not Manon Lescaut of Puccini, again Puccini heroines call for dramatic voices. Her voice is not big enough for Tosca. With some training, she might have been a fine Butterfly, but her Tosca is all wrong.
Amazing. Thank you for posting.
i think she was actually sharp at times but what a beautifuul sound i love kiri she is gorgeous and is blessed greatly

one of the most (if not the most) beautiful vibratos in the world – but a wrong interpretation in this role

her performance of Vissi d’Arte is absolutely the best!!!
It is Leontyne Price who owned this role … you must hear her sing it ..

Callas

I must have been hearing this for about 10 times.
I heard her sing this live at Tanglewood in the Berkshire Mountains many years ago.
I will never forget it.

I listened to Freni, Caballe, Price – all spectacular. This one touched me – no video – only audio.
